Keeping our eyes healthy is more than just a matter of correcting our
vision through glasses or contact lenses. Our
eyes need to be nourished from the inside as well. This is most easily achieved
by eating the right things. The nutrients found in most fruits and vegetables contain
everything we need to keep the eyes healthy and getting the proper nutrients to
the eyes can be a problem. When the eyes aren’t nourished enough, this may lead
to age-related eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Here we
list some of those vitamins that are so dear to our eyes .
1. Beta Carotene and Vitamin A.
When one consumes beta carotene, it is converted into Vitamin A in the
body. Beta carotene can be found in carrots, squash, apricots, and spinach.
Taking a healthy dose of beta carotene and Vitamin A daily can help prevent eye
diseases such as xeropthalmia or the drying of the cornea.
2. Lutein.
This nutrient is usually found in fruits and vegetables where beta
carotene is also present, such as carrots and spinach. It forms a protective
barrier in the eyes to shield them from cataracts and macular degeneration.
3. Vitamin E.
Commonly found in nuts, Vitamin E helps slow down the development of
cataracts and the progression of age-related macular degeneration. This vitamin
also aids in maintaining healthy cells, including that of the eyes. Out of all
the nuts, almonds and filberts contain the most Vitamin E.
4. Vitamin C.
This all-around super vitamin aids in eye health by maintaining healthy
collagen tissues in the eyes. It also takes part in the prevention and
treatment of glaucoma. C-vitamin can be most easily found in citrus fruits but
green chillies pack more of the vitamin than any other vegetable or fruit!
This mineral has been providing so many health benefits as it is an
excellent anti-oxidant. Studies have shown that zinc also plays a role in
protecting us against age-related eye diseases. The healthiest way to increase you
zinc intake is by eating sesame seeds or pumpkin seeds .
Taking health and dietary supplements are an essential part of eye care.
We should make sure that our eyes get the proper nourishment for them to stay
healthy longer and to prevent eye diseases that occur in our old age. Keeping
our vision sharp also helps us perform everyday tasks and allows us to enjoy
our lives more.
